Scope creep usually starts with a friendly “quick ask.” Then another. Then your timeline slips and your unpaid hours pile up. Protect the relationship by protecting the scope.
Define “done” up front
Write deliverables in measurable language: number of pages, revision rounds, platforms, and handoff files. Vague scopes create endless work.
Use a change-request habit
When something sits outside the agreement, acknowledge it warmly, then price and schedule it:
- “Happy to add that.”
- “It’s outside the current scope.”
- “Here’s the estimate and new timeline.”
Boundaries are professional. Free unlimited work is not generosity — it’s a broken process.
Batch feedback
Ask clients for consolidated feedback per round. Random mid-week pings create chaos. Structure creates calmer projects for everyone.
Protect launch week
Freeze new feature requests before launch. Park ideas in a Phase 2 list. Ship the agreed product, then improve it intentionally.
